Travel in Malaysia can be complicated in the sense that public holidays have to be taken in account whenever you are planning travel. It affects prices as well as availability of accommodations. These are usually known as peak periods and prices tend to go up. These include the school holidays, weekends, state holidays and national holidays for the various cultural festivals celebrated in Malaysia

Holidays and weekends in Malaysia can be somewhat confusing.
Certain holidays are national holidays and are observed by the entire country while others apply only to certain states. Similarly, weekends and school holidays also tend to be different especially in those of the conservatively Muslim states of Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis as compared with the other states of Malaysia. Another factor is that while some holidays have fixed dates, there are others that vary each year and are not fixed. These dates vary as to their religious or cultural background and by which of the Muslim, Indian or Chinese calendars is being used.

Holidays falling on a weekend (Saturday or Friday depending on the state - see below for details) will generally be celebrated on the following working day.

WEEKENDS

There are two different weekend days - Saturday and Sunday that applies to liberal States and Friday and Saturday that applies to conservative Islamic States

Saturdays and Sundays - Would apply for States
Federal Territory of K. Lumpur & Labuan, Penang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor,
Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Pahang, Sarawak and Sabah
If a public holiday falls on a Saturday, then Monday is a working day.

If it falls on a Sunday only, then is Monday a holiday.

Thursdays and Fridays - Would apply for States
Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu
If a public holiday falls on a Friday, then Sunday is a working day.

If it falls on a Saturday only, then is Sunday a holiday.
